Yesterday evening, BET hosted its annual hit program Black Girls Rock! Let me just say that black girls definitely rock, and I feel like it is highly important to have an entity that praises the accomplishments of successful black women. Hosted by the lovely Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King, there was never a dull moment. The best thing about this particular event is that you got a chance to see strong, powerful, influential, African American women of all ages getting recognized who normally wouldn’t. The list of awardees include Erykah Badu for the “Rockstar Award”, Ava Duvernay for the “Shot Caller Award”, Dr. Helene Gayle who received the “Social Humanitarian Award”, Jada Pinkett-Smith who was awarded the “Star Power Award”, Nadia Lopez who received the “Change Agent Award”, and the legendary Cicely Tyson who snagged the “Living Legend Award”.
Black Girls Rock is actually a non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialog and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media according to BET.com . Creator and founder Beverly Bonds , had a vision to simply make black girls of all backgrounds feel loved, appreciated, and teach them the importance of knowing their worth. Since Black Girls Rock! debut in 2006, Bonds has been doing just that. Outside of recognizing black women in the professional world, she also praises young ladies who have left an impact in their community and world, calling them “M.A.D. Girls”. This year Ms. Bonds had a special treat for everyone!
First Lady Michelle Obama made a guest appearance and shared a few words of wisdom for all the young ladies in attendance. Will Smith also was in attendance as a presenter. Some performers include soul singer Jill Scott, Faith Evans, Fantasia, Ciara, Lalah Hathaway and Shelia E. It was great to see Willow Smith in the audience celebrating her mother, since she had been a role model for thousands of young ladies across the world at such a young age. All in all, Black Girls Rock!, reminded me of why I am proud to be a black girl who rocks! To find out more about this incredible organization please visit http://www.bet.com/shows/black-girls-rock .
